Create a commitment using the Zuora UI

Learn how to create and configure commitments in the Zuora UI as part of an order, including applicable accounts, charge filters, and commitment schedules.

Commitments are created as part of an order. You can create a new order specifically for the commitment, or add a commitment to an existing order alongside subscription or other changes. Commitments can also be created using the Orders API. Refer to the Zuora API Reference for the full request schema.

You can create a commitment in a draft or scheduled order. When you save a draft order, the commitment data is retained and available when you reopen the draft. The commitment becomes active when the order is activated.

  1. During the order creation, in the Commitments section, click Create Commitment. Zuora automatically sets the commitment account to match the account associated with this order. For information on creating subscriptions and orders, see Orders tutorials - Create Subscriptions.
  2. Enter the basic information.
  3. Configure child commitments for overlapping commitments (nested mode). Use the Child Commitments section to add one or more child commitments to the parent commitment.

See Overlapping commitment for more information.

Note: The Child Commitments section is available only when overlapping commitment support is enabled for the tenant.

To enable overlapping commitments, navigate to Billing settings > Billing rules and configure the commitment billing rule. For information about the enablement setting, see Billing Rules - Commitment.

  4. Configure applicable accounts and charges. You can select which accounts' charges can contribute to the commitment from the following options:
    • Commitment account only (default)

    • Commitment account's direct child accounts

    • Commitment account and it's direct child account

    • Filtered accounts (accounts matching a custom field or other filter condition)

    • Selected accounts (manually selected by name)

Applicable accounts are associated with the commitment when you create it.

Note: After the commitment is created, when new accounts are created or existing accounts are modified, they may become eligible to be included in the commitment. To include additional applicable accounts, go to the commitment detail page and click the Reapply Applicable Items button in the Current Contribution Items section. The system will find applicable accounts to date and associate them with the commitment. Then, new charges created under those accounts will be included and will contribute to the commitment automatically. Existing charges created before the reapply process will not be included. Previously included accounts that are no longer applicable will not be excluded.

Choose which charges contribute. If a filter is not applied, all supported charge types on all applicable accounts are eligible:

    • All charges (default)

    • Filtered charges — filter by product, product rate plan, charge type, or custom field

If you are creating subscriptions or making other changes in the same order as the commitment, you can select those subscriptions, instead of referencing them indirectly through the custom fields.

    1. In the Filtered charges section, click Browse charges.
    2. Select one or more subscriptions to include in the commitment's charge filter.
    3. To review or change your selection, click Browse charges again.
      Note:

You can select charges based on the subscription's current version in the order. If a rate plan or charge was added and later removed by an earlier order action in the same order, it is not available for selection.

  5. To define commitment schedules, add one or more schedules based on the contract term. Schedules must be continuous - no gaps or overlaps. Schedule end date is exclusive. The system will auto-generate commitment periods for preview. Period end date is inclusive.

  7. Click Save to save the commitment and review the order.
  8. (Optional) Click the Edit icon to edit the commitment details, or the Delete icon to delete it.

When you reopen a draft order, the commitment data is available for review or editing.

  9. Click Activate to activate the order.

Once created, the commitment, schedules and periods become active, and eligible billed charges begin to contribute to the commitment balance according to the charge contribution process described earlier. For a scheduled order, the commitment remains associated with the order until the order is activated.
