Pending charge rules and behavior

Learn how pending charges behave in Quote Studio, including Estimated Start Date rules, metric handling, and behavior on amendment quotes.

Estimated Start Date rules

Use these rules when you enter an Estimated Start Date for a pending charge:

  • The field is required before you can submit the quote.

  • The date must be within the subscription term.

  • Past and present dates are valid because the field is used as a revenue forecast, not a billing trigger.

  • To make the Estimated Start Date field in Quote Rate Plan Charge object read-only for specific profiles or quote types, use Object Fields Config in Zuora Config > Quote Studio Settings.

Metrics behavior

Pending charges do not have billing impact yet, so Quote Studio does not calculate or display metrics for them.

For pending charge rows:

  • MRR, TCV, Delta MRR, and Delta TCV display "-" because no metrics are available.

  • Pending charges are excluded from Order Preview API calls.

  • No metric values are stored on QuoteRatePlanCharge__c.

Active charges on the same quote continue to display normal metrics.

Behavior on amendment quotes

When you create an amendment quote from a subscription that has pending charges in Billing, Quote Studio loads those charges automatically.

For these charges, Quote Studio shows:

  • The PENDING badge on the charge row.

  • The Estimated Start Date populated from Billing.

  • The Estimated End Date as a read-only field that Billing calculates automatically.

On an amendment quote, you can:

  • Change price, quantity, and other fields.

  • Change the Estimated Start Date if the new date is within the subscription term.

  • Activate the charge by setting a Trigger Date.

  • Remove the charge by using the standard remove flow.

If you update a pending charge on an amendment quote without setting a trigger date, Zuora CPQ sends an UpdateProduct order action to Billing and includes the updated estimated Start Date and pricing changes.

In that case, the charge remains pending, and Billing recalculates estimated End Date based on the updated estimated Start Date.
