Payment Method Updater for Adyen

This guide explains how to configure the Adyen Account Updater for integration with Zuora's Payment Method Updater, ensuring seamless updates for Visa and MasterCard card information.

Use Adyen Account Updater with the Zuora Payment Method Updater (PMU) to receive notifications when cardholders change, replace, or upgrade their Visa or Mastercard cards. This integration helps Zuora and you keep payment method information current.

Zuora receives updates from the Adyen gateway when any of the following events occur for a Mastercard or Visa credit card:

  • A new expiration date is available for an expired card.

  • A new card replaces the existing card.

  • The cardholder reports the card as lost or stolen.

  • The cardholder revokes authorization for the merchant to charge the card automatically.

Zuora uses the Adyen bulk account updater option for this integration. For more information about Adyen account updates, see Adyen Account Updater.

Note:

Do not define multiple PMU instances unless your business specifically requires them. Updating payment methods for specific gateway instances is not supported.

Submit and retrieve PMU batches

Zuora collects payment methods every day at 18:00:00 Pacific Time. To view the batches, go to Payments > Payment Method Updater. The batch list shows the Processing status for batches that are in progress.

An Adyen scheduled job runs every day at 18:00:00 Pacific Time. This job retrieves the completed batch from Adyen through SFTP. When the batch is sent successfully, the status changes to Completed.

If you try to resubmit batches within one hour before the daily scheduled batch processing time of 18:00:00 Pacific Time, Zuora returns an error. Wait until the daily batch processing finishes before you resubmit.

For more information about how to manually create PMU batches, resubmit batches, and retrieve batch results, see Use Payment Method Updater.

Keep in mind the following:

  • Zuora cannot populate report files with real cardholder names. Because Adyen requires the cardholder name field, Zuora uses a placeholder value as the cardholder name in report files.

  • The Adyen Account Updater feature has the following known limitations on both the Adyen and Zuora sides.

Adyen limitations

The following limitations apply on the Adyen side:

  • Only Visa and Mastercard are supported.

  • Adyen and the card updater service do not post report files based on requests in the test environment. Adyen posts report files only on the production server, so you can test this feature only from a production tenant.

  • For Adyen Payment Method Updater, if a batch result file contains no card updates, Adyen can return the file in an unencrypted format. Zuora's current Adyen PMU integration does not process these unencrypted response files. As a result, the PMU batch can fail, and closed-account notifications or other updates in that file might not be applied.
