Key information
Key concepts for using datasets, reports, and the Legacy Reporting UI in the new Reporting experience.
Legacy Reporting UI availability
During the beta period, you can toggle between the new Reporting experience and the Legacy Reporting UI from the Reports page. The legacy experience remains available and unchanged. This allows you to work with whichever interface you prefer as the new experience is rolled out.
Dataset fields and data availability
If your dataset does not have the fields you need, contact the dataset owner or your administrator. They can update the dataset to expose additional fields or create a new dataset tailored to your needs. Reports always work within the dataset definition. You cannot add fields that are not part of the dataset.
Understanding dataset-level filters
Dataset-level filters are enforced by the dataset owner to maintain data governance and security. They apply to all reports using that dataset and cannot be removed or overridden at the report level. Report-level filters allow you to narrow results further, but cannot extend beyond dataset constraints. This design ensures consistent data governance across all reports.
Reports and charts explained
A report is a structured table showing rows and columns with your data. A chart is a visual representation of data, such as a bar chart or pie chart. Charts provide a different perspective on the same underlying dataset or report data. Dashboards combine multiple charts into a single view. Each serves a different purpose in your analysis workflow.
Query-based datasets and SQL
When a dataset is created from a data query, the underlying SQL is defined by the dataset creator and is not editable from within Report Builder. This is intentional. It ensures that all reports using the dataset follow the same query logic and prevents unintended modifications. If you need to change the query, contact the dataset owner.
Dataset versioning and updates
When a dataset is updated, a new version is created. Existing reports reference a specific version, so they are not automatically affected by updates. New reports can use the latest version. If a dataset is deprecated or retired, reports may be unable to run. Monitor the dataset status and contact your administrator if you need clarity about version changes or if a report stops working.
