Configure HTML invoice templates for postpaid commitments

Learn how to configure an HTML invoice template to display postpaid commitment true-up details on customer-facing invoice PDFs.

  • Make sure the customer account uses an HTML invoice template.

  • Have a sample postpaid billing document available for preview.

  • Decide whether to display the commitment name or the commitment number.

  1. Open the invoice template configuration.
    1. Go to Billing > Manage Billing Document Configuration.
    2. Open the Manage Invoice Rules and Templates tab.
    3. Create an HTML invoice template or open an existing HTML invoice template.
  2. Add postpaid commitment information.

Add columns that make the postpaid true-up easy to identify and trace to the evaluated commitment period.

    Postpaid commitment invoice columns:

    Template columnSuggested labelPurpose
Commitment Name / NumberCommitment Name or Commitment NumberIdentifies the commitment using a customer-facing reference.
    Line-item nameCommitment true-up (shortfall)Identifies the line as a commitment true-up.
Commitment PeriodCommitment PeriodIdentifies the period evaluated by Zuora.
AmountTrue-up AmountShows the shortfall billed for the period.

If the template includes multiple types of invoice items, filter the invoice-item data by processing type or another commitment-specific condition so that commitment items are distinguishable from standard charge items.

  3. To display a commitment field in a data table, select the Commit object when you add the column. For example, to display the commitment name associated with a postpaid true-up line:
    1. In the HTML invoice template editor, select the data table.
    2. In the Data Table section, under Columns, click Add in the Header column.
    3. In the Add Column dialog, select the Commit object, and then select the commitment field that you want to display, such as the commitment name or number.
    4. In the Header field, enter a label, such as Commitment Name or Commitment Number.
    5. Click Add to save the column.
Note: Repeat these steps to add other commitment fields, such as the commitment period. Select the Commit object for each column so that the field is retrieved from the commitment associated with the invoice item.

For more information about adding data tables and configuring columns in HTML invoice templates, see Configure data tables in HTML templates.

  4. Save and assign the template.
    1. Save the template.
    2. Assign the template to the relevant customer account, if needed.
  5. Preview and validate the PDF output.
    1. Preview the template with a real postpaid billing document.
    2. Confirm that the true-up line and commitment context (Commitment Name/Number, Period, Amount) are visible and clear to the recipient.

The HTML invoice template displays commitment-related information for postpaid commitment scenarios.
