Nuvei 3DS2 payment flow

When a customer submits a card payment through a Nuvei-connected Payment Page 2.0, the transaction can complete in one of the following ways:

• Frictionless flow: The issuer approves authentication without challenging the customer, and the payment completes without an additional authentication step.
• Challenge flow: The customer completes a 3DS2 challenge, and the payment completes after successful authentication.
• Failure or rejection: If the customer does not complete authentication successfully, the payment attempt fails. Nuvei HPM 2.0 test coverage validates these failed challenge scenarios.

The Nuvei 3DS2 integration for Zuora HPM 2.0 captures and returns the data required for both frictionless and challenge flows, including challenge response data when the issuer requests it.

Gateway behavior and stored credentials

The initial customer-initiated transaction (CIT) is where Nuvei performs 3DS2 authentication. After the authenticated CIT completes, you can use the stored Nuvei credential for supported merchant-initiated transactions (MIT), including recurring and unscheduled MIT flows.

Nuvei also uses a clientUniqueId value in payment requests. This value acts as an idempotency key within a defined time window and helps prevent duplicate transactions on retries.

Best practices for Nuvei 3DS2

• Use Payment Pages 2.0 for customer-initiated card authentication flows.
• Collect complete customer and billing details so that the gateway and issuer have the data required for 3DS2 evaluation.
• Keep CAPTCHA and other Payment Pages 2.0 security measures active to reduce bot activity and card-testing attempts.
• Review the general Zuora 3DS2 guidance when you configure your gateway behavior. The issuing bank decides whether a card requires a challenge.
