Checkout Builder is a no-code configuration experience in Modernized Zuora Payments. You can use it to configure which payment methods to show, when to show them, what information to collect, and how the whole check experience should look. After you publish your changes, the updated configuration in Checkout Builder is reflected in your Zuora-hosted payment form.

How Checkout Builder works

Checkout Builder works with the payment methods and routes that you have configured.

Before a payment method can be shown in Checkout Builder, it must already be connected and configured for processing. In practice, this means the payment method must be available through your provider setup and have a published route. After that setup is complete, you can use Checkout Builder to decide whether the payment method should appear to customers and under which conditions it should appear.

For example, you can configure a payment method so that it is shown only for specific countries, currencies, and order amount. This allows you to tailor the checkout experience to different customer or transaction scenarios without changing your integration.

If you have more than one hosted payment form, each form maps to its own checkout configuration. This allows you to manage multiple checkout experiences while keeping each one aligned to its original payment methods and regional settings.

Changes that you make in the Checkout Builder do not take effect in the live checkout until you publish them. After you update payment method settings, required fields, or styling, use the Publish setting to apply the new configuration to your live checkout experience.

Payment method settings

In Checkout Builder, you can use payment method settings to control how each payment method appears and behaves. Depending on the payment method, you can configure:

  • Whether the payment method is enabled
  • The order of the supported payment methods
  • The conditions that control when a certain payment method is shown
  • The fields customers must complete
  • Whether verification fields, such as CVV, are collected for enrolled cards
  • The display name and logo for supported non-enrolled payment methods

Preview panel

The preview panel is displayed on the right side of the Checkout Builder. You can preview your live payment form as you update your payment method and styling settings. The following filters and options are available above the panel to facilitates verifying your configuration:

  • Tenant or account

  • Checkout names

  • Desktop or Mobile view

  • Country, Currency, and Amount

Enrolled and non-enrolled payment methods

Enrolled payment methods

An enrolled payment method is a payment method that is saved for future use. Use enrolled payment methods when you want to support scenarios such as:

  • Recurring payments
  • Subscription renewals
  • Future retries
  • Returning-customer checkout experiences

When a customer enrolls a payment method, the payment details are stored securely and referenced by a token rather than exposed directly. In Checkout, enrolled payment methods can behave differently from one-time payment methods. For example, some settings for appearance and verification apply differently to enrolled payment methods.

After enrollment, Zuora associates a vaulted token with the payment method without exposing sensitive data. The vaulted token can then be reused for future payments, including recurring charges, retries, and other stored-credential use cases.

Non-enrolled payment methods

A non-enrolled payment method, also known as one-time payment method, is used for a single transaction and is not saved for reuse. Use non-enrolled payment methods when you want to let a customer complete a payment without storing that payment method for future transactions.

This option is useful for guest checkout or for payment scenarios where reuse is not needed.

When to use enrolled or non-enrolled payment methods

Choose enrolled payment methods when you want to save a customer's payment method for future use. Choose one-time payment methods when you only need to process a single payment.

In many implementations, you will use both:

  • Enrolled payment methods for repeat customers, subscriptions, and retries
  • Non-enrolled payment methods for first-time or guest transactions

Your checkout configuration should reflect the payment experience that you want to offer for each scenario.
